Dehydrated vs. Dry Skin

Did you guys know that there is a difference between dehydrated and dry skin, and you might be surprised to learn that your “dry” skin might actually be dehydrated. While dry skin lacks oil, dehydrated skin lacks moisture.

Dry Skin

Dry skin tends to be permanent and is widely considered a skin type. If you have dry skin most likely you will have dry skin everywhere on your body not just your face. People with dry skin usually are more predisposed to getting wrinkles. You can’t get rid of dry skin per-say but you can improve your skin by using the correct products. Starting with your cleanser, someone with dry skin should not use a foaming cleanser because these tend to strip your skin of natural oils; the oils that dry skin already lacks. So, instead use a milky oil based cleanser to clean and moisturize your face. Use a toner that is not drying and make sure you moisturize with a nourishing lotion and supplement further with oils that are beneficial for your skin. A diet rich in healthy fats is also great  for those with dry skin.

Dehydrated Skin

We are always told it is important to hydrate, and when you are well hydrated your skin is well hydrated. When your skin is hydrated it looks supple, your skin is less prone to getting fine lines, and wrinkles, and your cells function at an optimal level. Dehydrated skin, unlike dry skin, is a condition that can be fixed and something most people will probably experience once in their lifetime. But not drinking water sometimes is not enough.

Skin dehydration can be caused by anything that damages your skin barrier, such as over exfoliating, stress, lack of sleep, not drinking enough water, a change in season or temperature, damage caused by skincare products, etc. Anything that damages your skin barrier can lead to dehydrated skin.

The good news? you can fix dehydrated skin.  

First make sure you are drinking enough water. If you are, we can move on to the other steps.  If you are not grab a water bottle and continue reading. 

Next, Cut down on harsh exfoliating products, these maybe irritating and causing stress to your skin especially if you’re over exfoliating. Which will damage your skin barrier. 

Use a moisturizing product with humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin to attract moisture to your skin. A product with ceramide, fatty acids, and one that is occlusive to promote a healthy skin barrier.

With dry and dehydrated skin its hard to tell the difference as seen in my little chart up above but a rule of thumb is, if you have dry skin all year round you most likely have dry skin. If you suddenly wake up and have dry flaky skin, you most likely have dehydrated skin.

Skin Barrier

Is your skin dry, dehydrated, sensitive, do you easily get fine lines and wrinkles? Did you say yes to all of the above or to only one? If your skin fills any of these characteristics than you might have a damaged moisture barrier.

What is the moisture barrier

The moisture barrier is your outermost layer of your skin it is located in the epidermis. Made up of cells and lipids the barrier protects your skin from bacteria and regulates the moisture of your skin, keeping the good things from leaving and not letting bad things get inside. The barrier also regulates inflammation.

However, a compromised skin barrier means that moisture will escape the skin leaving your skin dry and dehydrated. Not only can your skin be dry and dehydrated from a damaged barrier but sensitivity, breakouts, and wrinkles are also a sign of damage.       

Healthy Barrier

Cells are the building blocks of the human body. Your barrier is made up of cells and lipids. Below is a representation of a healthy moisture barrier. The red circle represents bacteria that wants to get inside your and wreak havoc on your skin. The blue circle represents moisture as a whole.

Below we have a representation of a damaged barrier. Our barrier now has “cracks” that allow bacteria inside and let moisture escape which leads to where we are now.

Why might your barrier be damaged?

There are many reasons as to why your moisture barrier might be damaged.

One reason is age; when you age your moisture barrier gets worse at doing its job because lipids decrease and so your skin needs help in the form of a proper skincare routine.

Mental stress and fatigue can also damage your barrier that’s why taking time to unwind and destress is important. Make time for yourself. In today’s busy world people often forget to take care of themselves. Remember guys, your health is important.

Environmental factors can cause damage to your barrier. When the weather changes sometimes your skin cannot adjust to these changes which causes damage to your skin. When winter comes knocking on the door our indoor heating goes up which causes dry conditions and that can “cracks” in your barrier so invest in a humidifier.

Over-exfoliating can damage the barrier of your skin, that’s why you should only exfoliate a few times a week and if you know your skin can’t handle a few times then you should only exfoliate once a week.

Excessive washing and using drying cleansers cause dry skin. When you shower or bathe you should wash in lukewarm water and use soaps and cleansers that are not drying or damaging to your skin. If you cannot give up your hot showers, and I know how hard it can be, then try and cut down on the time you spend showering and. Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils so it is important not to spend a long time in hot water.

Also, remember to put on sunscreen so that your skin does not suffer from sun damage.

How to improve your moisture barrier

Now that you know that your dry skin might be because of a damaged moisture barrier, you are probably dying to find out how to help fix your barrier.

  • If showering in hot water is bad for your skin, then washing your face with hot water is also damaging. Wash your face with lukewarm water to avoid damaging your skin barrier.
    • Avoid drying cleansers and if your barrier is already compromised use moisturizing creamy cleansers.
  • Do not exfoliate every day, keep your exfoliating from one to a few times a week.
  • Pick a good moisturizer one with hyaluronic acid and glycerin is usually recommended.
  • Try moisturizing masks for that extra pick me up. This might just be your chance to try that sheet mask you’ve been eyeing.
  • Avoid products that have added fragrances.
  •  If you drink coffee, drink a cup of water right after your coffee.
  • In general drink plenty of water every day to keep your skin hydrated.

Chia Seed Pudding

I love chia seeds, I love chia seed pudding, oatmeal with chia seeds, I love to sprinkle the seeds on my salads and into my smoothies. But I’d have to say that the thing I love the most is chia seed pudding, especially in the mornings as an easy hassle free breakfast. To top it off chia seeds are filled with nutrients and we all know that the first step to healthy and clean skin is a healthy diet.

Sidenote: I also completely adore the trend of putting your food in jars, it is just so cute!


First, we will start with the ratio of chia seeds to liquid (I love to use coconut milk in my pudding). So, for whatever liquid you use, you have to use 1 cup to every 1/4 cup of chia seeds. From this, you can basically add whatever you want to your chia seed pudding base and make your own yummy creation. Another thing I love about chia seed pudding is how easy it is to make.

  • 1/4 Cups chai seeds
  • 1 Cup coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • *1 teaspoon of honey or agave nectar

After you mix all your ingredients together you can leave it in the fridge in order for it to thicken up into the consistency you want. I would usually make my pudding before bed so I can just grab it out of the fridge in the morning before an 8am lecture. If you want you can make several servings in one batch and just keep it in the fridge, it should sit well for a few days.

* for sweetening you can add as much as you want. l I think the coconut milk is already sweet enough and doesn’t need more sweetness especially after you top it with yummy berries and other fruits.


I love to top off my chia seed pudding with raspberries, bananas, almonds, and a tablespoon of cacao nibs.

Chia seeds are an antioxidant-rich food, and an antioxidant-rich diet means that your skin will repair faster and further damage will be prevented, by eating antioxidant-rich foods you can prevent the premature aging of your skin. Who doesn’t love healthy and youthful looking skin?
